Sue and Jesse

Sue Stanton is an artist and photographer with a love of nature and color.

I was born and raised in BC - mostly in mill towns on the coast.  I prefer wilderness over city.  I prefer thrift stores over department stores. I prefer curves over straight lines.  I surround myself in color and art.

I took two years of college in a Media Resources program which focused on photography, multi image, video and design for educational media.  When I finished the program I worked freelance in the industry, staging equipment to present other peoples work as well as working on the production side.  I travelled quite a bit for work so when the opportunity to settle in the Okanagan came up I chose that, even though it meant giving up the production work I enjoyed.

Everything changed again with the arrival of my daughter.  I wanted to give her a stable life with white picket fences and ballet classes - a lifestyle that I didn’t have growing up. During that time I put down my sketchpad and pens and gave all of my attention to raising my child. I worked a 9 to 5 job and remodelled a couple of homes during that time. I found a bit of time for photography and did occasional work taking photos for marketing material for the business I worked for.  Mostly my creativity began to manifest in other ways, through things like home renovations, decorating and landscaping.  I don't regret my choices to switch gears, but ultimately I knew that it wasn't what my daughter and I were looking for in life.

I sold the house, put everything in storage, bought a travel trailer and left.  I travelled North America for a year with my teenage daughter and our large dog.  We all survived living in 200 square feet together. We saw so many amazing places and things, my only regret is that we only had a year.  We were drawn to the wilderness areas and national parks rather than the big cities and although we travelled inland we always came back to the beaches.

After our trip we settled on North Vancouver Island, where we could be close to beaches and wilderness areas. After two and a half years of living in the travel trailer and cabins at Telegraph Cove, I decided to purchase a home in Port Alice. I got my art supplies out of storage and after many years, I now have the space, time and desire to once again pursue my passion for artistic expression. Of course old habits never really die, and I am remodeling my new home at the same time. I am so glad to finally have the space and freedom to get back to my roots.

UPDATE JANUARY 2023

Another move and another renovation! I have taken the opportunity to relocate to Bassano Alberta. I am now the owner of a 1910 bank building with a studio/gallery space on the main floor and a residence upstairs. I have opened The Bank Creative and I am very excited about being able to support other local artisans through use the space. You can check it out on facebook at The Bank Creative.

I really hope you enjoy the work and my creative expression, colour, curves and all. Please visit the shopping page for links to my online stores and help me continue exploring my newly awakened passion for art. Thank you!
